When you think of France, you might picture charming streets, exquisite cuisine, and rich history. Now, imagine all of that combined with the vibrant colors, warm breezes, and tropical landscapes of the Caribbean. Welcome to Martinique, a unique island that embodies the essence of France while offering the laid-back charm of the Caribbean.

Our journey began with a scenic ferry ride from St. Lucia to Martinique. The vibrant blue waters of the Caribbean set the stage for our adventure. After an hour and a half, we arrived in Fort-de-France, where the excitement truly began. The bustling streets were alive with the sounds of Creole music and the fragrant aromas of local cuisine wafting through the air.

Our first stop was the stunning Saint Louis Cathedral, a beautiful structure that showcases Martinique's unique architectural blend. We loved the colourful market nearby, where we picked up fresh fruit and homemade coconut rum liqueur — similar to our Baileys. We then took a short ferry ride to our apartment in Trois-Îlets, a charming area known for its beautiful beaches and relaxed vibe. The apartment was perfect for our family — well-equipped, and just a stone's throw from the beach.

Our second day took us to La Savane des Esclaves, a historical site dedicated to the island's history and culture. This open-air museum provided a fascinating look at Martinique's heritage. The museum is built on a former plantation and focuses on the life and struggles of slaves who were brought to Martinique during the colonial period. Through its carefully curated exhibits, La Savane des Esclaves highlights the resilience of these people and their contributions to the island's culture and identity.

Our final day was dedicated to nature at the breathtaking Jardin de Balata. This botanical garden is a must-see, featuring a stunning array of tropical plants and flowers. We were in awe of the colourful blooms and the impressive collection of palm trees. One of the highlights was the suspended walkway that allowed us to see the garden from above. The panoramic views were incredible! We spent hours exploring, taking photos, and even spotted some hummingbirds flitting about.

We visited Cascade Absalon too as it was only 5 minutes away by car. Our little one loved splashing in its cool waters.

Les Salines — widely considered one of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean

Martinique is a paradise for nature lovers. The island boasts stunning beaches, lush rainforests, and the majestic Mount Pelée, an active volcano that offers breathtaking views. Renting a car is the best way to explore the island's diverse landscapes at your own pace. We had a very affordable mini and it served the purpose quite well as the roads were as good as in Europe.

Driving along the coastal roads, we discovered hidden beaches like Anse Dufour and Les Salines, where the golden sands and turquoise waters felt straight out of a postcard. The scenic routes take you through charming villages, where you can admire colonial architecture and colourful Creole houses that reflect the island's French heritage.

Martinique's food scene blends French bistro classics with vibrant Creole flavours

One of the first things that struck me upon arriving in Martinique was the food. The island is a gastronomic delight, blending traditional French cuisine with Caribbean flavors. You'll find charming bistros serving dishes like coq au vin alongside local specialties such as colombo, a delicious curry dish. Don't miss the chance to sample boudin at a local market or enjoy fresh seafood caught just off the coast. Pair your meals with a glass of local rum or a crisp French wine, and you'll feel like you're dining in a Parisian café with an ocean view!

Martinique truly offers the best of both worlds — a place where the sophistication of French culture meets the relaxed vibe of the Caribbean. Whether you're indulging in culinary delights, exploring breathtaking landscapes, or enjoying the warmth of the locals, you'll find that Martinique is a unique destination that captures the heart and soul of both cultures. For anyone seeking a travel experience that's rich in history, flavour, and beauty, Martinique is a must-visit.
